Joker — An Alternative Ending
Arthur sits alone after another humiliating day, the painted smile on his face beginning to crack. The anger that has been gathering in him offers an easy answer: become the figure everyone seems to expect, and make the world feel his hurt. Instead, he wipes the paint away. It does not erase what he has learned about his illness or his past, and it cannot undo the cruelty he has endured. But for the first time, he refuses to let those things decide what he does next. He tells Penny he cannot keep pretending that everything is fine. Their conversation is difficult, and neither of them has a simple cure to offer. Arthur asks for help beyond the two of them, then gives up the small job that has become another source of fear and shame. His dream of comedy remains, but he stops treating applause as proof that he deserves to exist. The world has not become kinder; Arthur has simply chosen not to turn his pain into a new identity. His future is uncertain, but the Joker never gets to take his place.
