Where to Watch La Chasse au lion à l'arc (1967) in the US

What it's about

A landmark ethnographic documentary by Jean Rouch that captures a traditional lion hunt carried out by the Gow people in West Africa. The film follows a group of hunters as they prepare for and undertake the dangerous ritual of hunting a lion using only bows and poisoned arrows. Rather than presenting it as a simple adventure, Rouch documents the entire process in detail: the crafting of weapons, the use of poison, the tracking of the lion, and the collective strategies used to corner it. The lion hunt itself is not glorified but shown as a necessary and deeply rooted cultural practice, tied to tradition, identity, and respect for nature. Overall, the film is both a record of a vanishing way of life and a reflection on the relationship between humans, animals, and ritual in a specific cultural context.
